Queen Elizabeth I Of England - 1040 Words

Elizabeth sat in her bedroom in the Buckingham palace brushing her long, curly, red hair which was stained with strands of gray. She focused on the mirror and softly stared at the freckles on her pale skin, which looked as if it needed to be ironed, and her dark brown eyes that looked like a black hole against her pale complexion. The year was 1587, Elizabeth had gone through so much to be here. Oh, my mistake, I should probably refer to her by her formal name. The Elizabeth of this daring story full of anger and spite is none other than Queen Elizabeth I of England. To tell the full story though, we must travel back some 50 years to when Elizabeth was only 3 years old. The year is 1536, her mother, Anne Boleyn, has failed to produce a†¦show more content†¦The year is 1553, after some long and confusing years of switching between rulers, Queen Mary I, also known as Bloody Mary, came into power. Mary was the first child of King Henry VIII (Elizabeth s father if you forgot) bu t King Henry changed the religion of the country from Catholic to Protestant just so that he could divorce Mary s mother. After the divorce, Mary was declared illegitimate, same as Elizabeth. After some rather confusing years in England s history, Mary rose to power and claimed the throne in 1553 as what the Catholics believed to be the rightful heir of the throne. Here is why she has the nickname â€Å"Bloody Mary.† She reversed the religion of England from Protestant back to Catholic and then she burned over 280 religious dissenters at the stake in the Marian persecutions in only a short 5 year reign. The year is 1558, Elizabeth came into power after her sister, Mary died. But the rode to keeping the title of queen will not be easy. Elizabeth made the country back into Protestant, which many resented her for. More than just religion, Elizabeth refused to marry, and soon became known as the â€Å"Virgin Queen†. This provided another conflict for Elizabeth, many believ ed a woman was unfit to rule a country and wanted another ruler. But, her biggest conflict was with her cousin, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, who just so happened to be Catholic. Here, let me explain to you why these two woman are perfect arch enemies. Of course

Analysis Of The Movie Charlie Hebdo - 1296 Words

The Charlie Hebdo Case This incident is concerning the French magazine entitled, â€Å"Charlie Hebdo†. The magazines they publish are satirical in nature and generally have an anti -religious or secular undertone, mocking many religions through its artwork and the words of the magazine itself. Recently, on January 7th of this year, brothers of an Islamic extremist regime shot and killed 11 members of the magazine and a French policeman. Further, an additional 11 members of the magazine were injured. The message of â€Å"je suis Charlie† which, translated from French means â€Å"I am Charlie† became a world wide statement used in rallies and in social media to show solidarity with those killed essentially expressing their agreement with the magazine’s right to exist and the importance of freedom of expression. Section 2(b) applies to this case because it grants the freedom of thought, believe, opinion, expression and freedom of the press to all Canadian C itizens. The reason the Islaimic Extremists chose to shoot and kill members of the Charlie Hebdo magazine is because they (the extremists) believed that their religion (Islam ) was being depicted in a way not allowed by their faith and that it was ridiculed and disrespected. Charlie Hebdo exercised freedom of expression though their depiction of various religions in their artwork and the messages the magazine contained and they exercised freedom of the press by publishing their views. I believe that in this particular case section 2

Baz Luhrmanns Act 1 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet Essay Example For Students

Baz Luhrmanns Act 1 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet Essay Baz Luhrmanns version of Act 1 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet explores various themes of love, conflict and feuds. Luhrmann uses many techniques in his own style of directing, such as different types of camera work, editing and the soundtrack, similarly to Moulin Rouge which is also directed by Luhrmann, to convey the characters and atmosphere in this timeless classic. My essay will analyse these directing techniques by looking at the pros and cons in that scene, making is easier to determine which techniques express the different characters and moods in a particular way. The various techniques Luhrmann uses in his version, like lighting and ambient colours, give the viewer a frenzied atmosphere. Throughout the scene we see tense and tranquil moments which Luhrmann uses to relate to the situations in which Romeo and Juliet are in. Right at the beginning, when Romeo enters the party, the camera movement is very slow and unsteady. We see close shots of Romeos face when he shows his invitation card to the man at the entrance. Here we get a clear picture of his expressions which helps the viewer keep up with his emotions or moods as they change. Baz Luhrmann uses eye-line matching, still while the camera is tilting from one event to another, to indicate that Romeo is not in his normal state of mind because he is blinking his eyes in a disorientated manner. Later on when he mentions in a quiet tone The drugs are quick, reaffirms this and suggests hes in his own world. Luhrmann is using the costumes the characters are wearing to reflect on their character and roles that they are shown to take up. At the opening of the party we see Romeo dressed up as a knight. Romeo is symbolising the knight in shining armour at the party to rescue Juliet, the damsel in distress, from her controlled and constrained lifestyle at the Capulet household. The audience soon begin to realise that if they were to meet, this could spark of arguments between the two houses which underlines the theme of conflict and family feuds. Also still while Romeo is entering the party, the camera slow cuts on spinning fireworks high up on the mansion wall. Luhrmann is using the swirling fireworks on the wall to symbolise Romeos mind-state or emotions. The audience could get the impression here that Romeo is emotionally spinning out of control from his current love relationship. In reality most of the audience know Romeo will eventually meet Juliet and fall in love with her at first site. The fact that they cannot be together allows the audience to sympathise with Romeo because this helps them relate to themselves and are expecting to see a weaker side of him. Luhrmann shows Mercutio coming to the party hyper and uses slow motion to help the audience focus on him and things around him even more. The guns surrounding him dont necessarily portray him as having a violent nature but suggest that violence and danger revolves around him no matter if he likes it or not because hes in a position and status of power. Again in here the theme of conflict is brought up. As Romeo is looking around in a dazed behaviour, he sees Tybalt but Tybalt doesnt notice him. The medium high angle shot on Tybalt can symbolise him lowering himself and his dignity by his actions and his evil personality depicted throughout the film. Tybalts devil costume highlights this aspect about him even further and already puts across a bad impression of him to the audience watching. In the first quarter of scene 5, while Mercutio is singing Kim Mazzelles Young Hearts Run Free, we see Luhrmann frequently using slow cuts to focus the audiences attention and concentration on words spoken or visual props which could reflect on characters in the scene or the mood/s. This brings the audiences awareness of what Mercutio is singing young hearts run free. To yourself be true, dont be no fool. Luhrmann has cleverly used these lyrics to reflect of the love of Romeo and Juliet and their relationship to come which acts as a hint to Romeo try get passed any obstacles for love, even if it involves death. The first time Romeo and Juliet meet. Their costumes echo their positions in life and their relationship because despite being dressed as a knight he is still human and Juliet is dressed as an angel who is out of his reach. Beowulf and Grendel - Book and Film EssayThe camera watching from far could imply its something dangerous and wants to keep its distance from whatever Tybalt will or is thinking of doing. A good way Baz Luhrmann conveys Capulets power is when Capulet is holding Tybalt as if hes in control of him and would not tolerate rebellion against him. Baz Luhrmann uses a low angle shot when showing Capulet scolding Tybalt and having Capulet above the camera signifies he is an important and powerful person because it is as if the audience is looking up at someone superior. Capulet being upstairs where there is no one could symbolise a higher place like heaven where powerful people watch you from there. Tybalt getting enraged over Romeo suggests that he is disrupting that solemnity and peace that you are meant to have in heaven. This shows Capulets position and status as someone with authority and has power over everything, which could be why is dressed as Caesar. Capulet affirms his authority over Tybalt by looking him straight in the eyes to make sure he realises that he is serious and doesnt to be double crossed by someone he sees inferior. This conveys Capulets character as someone who has good control over a situation because he can be serious when he finds appropriate and knows he needs to be welcoming throughout the party to keep his guests pleased. In this particular moment Luhrmann uses both high and low angles to convey the different positions or statuses that Romeo and Juliet are in. Romeo is down looking up at the princess or gazing at the stars which he cannot get, this is already a tragedy because he was meant to be the knight in shining armour there to get the princess. Juliet is like the cursed beauty that has to marry someone who her parents want. Lady Capulet who leads Paris, Juliets intended marriage and Juliet upstairs. The costume Paris is wearing, an astronauts suit, symbolises him as also out of this world and someone who is meant to be up there with Juliet. This introduces a new theme of Fate which goes against Romeo and Juliets love all throughout the film. Luhrmann uses medium shot eye-line matching while Romeo and Juliet have eventually found out who their real identities are and realise the reality dawning on them. This is seen as the beginning and the end of the whole relationship. This event helps the viewers feel more sympathetic towards Romeo and Juliet because so far both Romeo and Juliets characters are seen as pure and loving. While Juliet is dancing with Paris after being taken away from Romeo by the nurse, she is constantly looking at Romeo and he is also admiring her. This is shown by the eye-line matching. The eye-line matching is done in fast cuts which continually indicate their desire for each other because they dont want to lose sight of each other. This shows their love-stricken feelings and emphasises their love to the viewer. The soundtrack in the background is Desree singing Im kissing you while Romeo and Juliet are repeatedly looking at each other, the mood in here is romantic and every time the viewer hears those lyrics, the audience notices that RJ are looking at each implying that is what theyre thinking of. Throughout this incident of RJ finding out each others identities. Luhrmann uses slow cuts and the camera movement is also slow. This technique intensifies the moment and gives impact to the audiences reactions because by now weve established that the audience have sympathy for RJ. Overall, this film has successfully used various types of method to convey different character, themes and moods by using a great number of directing techniques with Baz Luhrmanns own style. Luhrmann has used all of the Act 1 Scene 5s aspects to create tension and suspense for the audience in different ways. On the whole, Baz Luhrmanns version of Act 1 Scene 5 has shown and proven that the film has more to it than it seems and viewers need to read between the lines to understand the full meaning and message of the film.

First world war poetry 39 faris-slm Web definitions A war poet iS a poet written at that time and on the subject of war. This term, at the beginning applied especially to those in military service during World War I. then, documented as early as IS4B in reference to German revolutionary poet, Georg Herwegh The main figures in the first world war Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967)-1 Siegfried Sassoon was perhaps the most innocent of the war poets. John Hildebdle has called Sassoon the accidental hero. Born Into a wealthy Jewish family In 1886, Sassoon lived the pastoral life of a young squire: fox-hunting, playing cricket, golfing nd writing romantic verses. Being an Innocent, Sassoons reaction to the realities of the war were all the more bitter and vlolent both his reaction Trough his poetry and his reaction on the battlefield (after the death ot fellow officer David Thomas and has brother Hamo at Gallipoli). Sassoon sadness, he believed that the Germans were entirely to blame. Sassoon showed innocence by gong public to protest against the war. Luckily. his friend and fellow poet Robert Graves convinced the review board that Sassoon was suffering from shell-shock and he was sent instead to the military ospital at Craig Lockhart where he met and influenced Wilfred Owen. Sassoon is a key figure in the study of the poetry of the Great War: he brought with him to the war the ideal pastoral background. he began by writing war poetry reminiscent of Rupert Brooke. he wrote with such war poets as Robert Graves and Edmund Blunden. e spoke out publicly against the war. he spent thirty years reflecting on the war through his memoirs, and at last he found peace in his religious faith. Some critics found his later poetry lacking in comparison to his war poems. How to Die Dark clouds are smouldering into red While down the Craters morning burns The dying soldier shifts his head TO watch the glory that returns He lifts his fingers toward the skies Where holy brightness b reaks in name: Radiance reflected in his eyes, And on his lips a whispered name. Youd think, to hear some people talk, That lads go West with sobs and curses, And sullen faces white as chalk, Hankering for wreaths and tombs and hearses. But theyve been taught the way to do it Like Christian soldiers: not with haste And shuddering groans: but passing through it With due regard for decent taste. From the age of nineteen Owen wanted to be a poet and immersed himself in poetry, eing especially impressed by Keats and Shelley. He wrote almost no poetry of importance until he saw action in France in 1917. He was deeply attached to his mother to whom most of his 664 letters are addressed. (She saved everyone. ) He was a committed Christian and became lay assistant to the vicar of Dunsden near Reading 1911-1913 teaching Bible classes and leading prayer meetings as well as visiting parishioners and helping in other ways. He escaped bullets until the last week of the war, but he saw a good deal of front-line action: he was blown up, concussed and suffered shell-shock. At Craig Lockhart, the psychiatric hospital in Edinburgh, he met Siegfried Sassoon who inspired him to develop his war poetry. He was sent back to the trenches in September, 1918 and in October won the Military Cross. by seizing a German machine-gun and using it to kill a number of Germans. On 4th November he was shot and killed near the village of Ors. The news of his death reached his parents home as the Armistice bells were ringing on 11 November. Wilfred Owen is the greatest writer of war poetry in the English language. He wrote out of his intense personal experience as a soldier and wrote with matchless power of the physical, moral and psychological impact of the First World War. All of his great war poems about his reputation rests were written only in a fifteen months. Anthem for Doomed Youth BY WILFRED OWEN What passing-bells for these who die as cattle? Only the monstrous anger of the guns. Only the stuttering rifles rapid rattle Can patter out their hasty orisons. No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells, Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,† The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling for them from sad shires. What candles may be held to speed them all? Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes. The pallor of girls brows shall be their pall; Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds, And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds In England For the first time, am essential number of important English poets were soldiers, writing about their experiences of war. A number of them died on the battlefield, most famously Rupert Brooke, Edward Thomas, and Wilfred Owen. Siegfried Sassoon survived but were scarred by their experiences, and this was reflected in their poetry. Wilfred Gibson (1878-1962) -3 Wilfred Wilson Gibson was born in Hexham, England in 1878. Gibson worked for a time as a social worker in Londons East End. He published his first verse in 1902, Mountain Lovers. He had several poems included in various Georgian poetry 1910. After the outbreak of war, Gibson served as a private in the infantry on the Western Front. It was therefore from the perspective of the ordinary soldier that Gibson wrote his war poetry. His active service was brief, but his poetry contradict his lack of experience, Breakfast being a prime example of ironic war verse written during the very early stages of the conflict following the armistice, Gibson continued riting poetry and plays. His work was particularly concerned with the poverty of industrial workers and village workers. Back They ask me where Ive been, And what Ive done and seen. But what can I reply Who know it wasnt l, But someone Just like me, Who went across the sea And with my head and hands Killed men in foreign lands Though I must bear the blame, Because he bore my name. str Herbert Read (1893-1968) -4 the poet and critic, was born in France, Yorkshire in 1893 His college studies, at Leeds University, were interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War, in which he served with the Yorkshire Regiment in France and Belgium. During his service he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and Military Cross in the same year, 1918. Read wrote two volumes of poetry based upon his war experiences: Songs of Chaos (1915) and Naked Warriors, published in 1919, along with two volumes of autobiography, In Retreat (1925) and Ambush (1930). He became an outspoken pacifist during the Second World War. He continued to publish poetry for the remainder of his life, his final volume, Collected Poems, being published in 1966. As a literary critic he championed the 19th-century English Romantic authors, for example in The True Voice of Feeling Studies in English Romantic Poetry . Ernest Hemingway -5 Ernest Hemingway, the son of Clarence Edmonds Hemingway, a doctor, was was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on 21st July, 1899. His mother, Grace Hall Hemingway, was a music teacher but had always wanted to be an opera singer. According to Carlos Baker, the author of Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story (1969), he began writing stories as a child: Ernest loved to dramatize everything, continuing his boyhood habit of aking up stories in which he was invariably the swashbuckling hero. When the United States entered the First World War in 1917 Hemingway attempted to sign up for the army but was rejected because of a defective eye. He therefore Joined the Red Cross as an ambulance driver. He later wrote: One becomes so accustomed to all the dead being men that the sight of a dead woman is quite shocking. I first saw inversion of the usual sex of the dead after the explosion of a munition factory which had been situated in the countryside near Milan. We drove to the scene of the disaster in trucks along poplar-shaded roads. Arriving where the munition plant had been, some of us were put to patrolling about those large stocks of munitions which which had gotten into the grass of an adjacent field, which task being concluded, we were ordered to search the immediate vicinity and surrounding fields for bodies. We found and carried to an improvised mortuary a good number of these and I must admit, frankly, the shock it was to find that those dead were women rather than men. A Farewell to Arms (1929), Hemingways great novel set against the background of the war in Italy, and eclipses the poetry dealing with his war-time experiences.

Office Etiquette Essay Example

Office Etiquette Essay Office Etiquette People are always required to know proper etiquette whether they are at home, in school, in public places, or in the office. Working with other people in an organization or company requires necessary conduct or behavior so that people can work in a friendly environment and be able to do their job well. Office etiquette is very essential so that a workplace will be organized, disciplined, and comfortable for the employees. Respecting others and being well-mannered in the office make a solid relationship between people in the workplace. It is important to build trust and respect among people in the office since most workers spend most of their time at work or in the office. † (Menon, 2008) This paper will provide guidelines and what to do and what not to do in a workplace in order to maintain a pleasant environment office. Cell Phone Etiquette Cellular phones are regarded as a necessity nowadays. It is very handy but can also create disturbance in people especial ly at work when everybody’s quiet and busy working. It is important to be discreet when inside the workplace; there are people who do not have any consideration at all when it comes to using their mobile phones. One should be aware on the proper use of cellular phones at workplace. It is important to turn the ringer off or turn it to silent or vibrate mode so that when somebody calls, the other people in the workplace will not be disturbed with the loud ring. Moreover, sounds or ringing tone from the phone can be annoying for some people. Another point to remember is to use the cell phone only during emergencies or important calls, such as when there is a family emergency and any other situation that is really serious and urgent. In many cases, it is also a rule not to bring cellular phones to meetings as it can disturb not only the people in the meeting but also the owner of the phone itself. When someone calls or sends messages to his or her cell phone, this could shift the owner’s attention from the meeting to the call or text message. Email Etiquette In emailing clients, business partners, and co-workers, one should take into account the proper and ethical way of sending messages and letters through email. Emails should be written in a form of letter. They should not appear s a simple note or text message that people send to their friends or family. It is important to be courteous and formal in writing an email. â€Å"The sender should also check the grammar and spelling of the letter as it can give a very bad impression on the sender if he or she does not know such simple things. † (Montandon, 2008) Emailing non-work related emails is not ethical and can make a bad impression on a person. à ¢â‚¬Å"Sending these kinds of emails can also make other people in the office feel that this person is not working hard enough because he or she has the time to send and forward emails that are not relevant to work†. Reid, 2008) Clothes and Appearance A lot of offices require their workers to wear business attire clothes or casual wear when coming to work. Dress codes are usually different and depend on the company’s rules. Nevertheless, no matter what the dress code is, one should be aware of the proper clothes to wear when going to work. It is important to always make an effort to appear clean and tidy at work. One should be neat in whatever style of dress or clothes he or she wears. â€Å"Clothes do reflect on an individual’s personality as well, so it is essential for people to always look neat. (Office Etiquette, 2008). For women, it is necessary to wear decent clothes and to avoid clothing that may cause distractions or problems in the workplace. On the oth er hand, â€Å"men should wear something that is presentable and neat such as polo shirts, slacks, and neck tie. They should make sure that their clothes are neatly pressed† (Reid, 2008). Grooming Good grooming and hygiene are also very important. It makes a person look professional when he or she looks neat and smells fresh when coming to work. They should also wash hands frequently, take care of body odor and bad breath, and cover their mouths before yawning, coughing, and sneezing. â€Å"One should be very careful also in using perfumes and colognes since it can cause allergic reactions to some people. † (Menon, 2008). Physical and Verbal behavior Individuals should take into consideration every act that they do and words that they say. The way somebody talks and behaves represents their personality and character, so it is important for employees to be very careful with their actions and the things that they say inside the office. They should always try to be courteous not only with the bosses but as well as with the co-workers. They should also use language that is appropriate and not too causal when talking to somebody. They should avoid making jokes and comments that may not be likable and even offensive. It is very important to think first before saying and doing something (Office Etiquette, 2008). Gossiping Gossiping is common among people especially people in the workplace during lunch or break times. If a co-worker starts to gossip around, it is advised to refuse courteously into the person who wants to gossip. It is very important to just â€Å"mind your own business. † People should know that the personal life of individuals in the workplace should be respected (Reid, 2008). Relationships It is possible to have workplace romance in the office. Therefore, people who are in a romantic relationship should be professional enough to know what to do. There should be no favoritism, personal chats, or fights inside the office. They should be courteous enough to know their limitations and be able to work professionally. (Reid, 2008). Greeting/Common Courtesy â€Å"It is essential for the workers to greet people in the workplace such as saying hi, hello, or good morning whenever they see their co-workers in the hallway, restroom, or wherever†. (Montandon, 2008) It is expected that some people will have a hard time to get along with others, and there are some people who may be annoying. Nevertheless, it is still important for them to greet each other. They should always make an effort to smile and be cheerful, thoughtful, and cooperative with everybody at work (Scheneider, 2006) Work Space An office worker should have his own corner, table, or desk to work with. It is very important for employees to maintain cleanliness and orderliness in the said area. Like physical appearance, the environment also reflects the personality of a person. Having a clean environment or surroundings makes the place conducive to work at. One should always try to keep his or her space or working stations orderly and organized. It is advisable to have all the files and papers be placed in a box or folders so that they will not be scattered all over the table. Simple cleaning is necessary and important for employees to do in their own work stations. After all, they are not required to clean the whole office area since there is somebody assigned to do that job, which is the job of a janitor (Office Etiquette, 2008). Security There will be important papers, files, and documents in a workplace, and it is important to always keep them private and confidential. It is important not to leave these documents and papers out in the open. These files should be kept in some safe place where nobody can see and take a look at them. People at work should also respect their co-workers belongings. â€Å"They should not to touch or get something from their co-employee’s belongings without asking permission. This is a sign of respect for other people’s things; if somebody wants his or her possessions to be respected, he or she should also do the same thing to other people†. (Menon, 2008) Habits People have their own habits that sometimes are very hard to stop. Some habits could be annoying for people such as tapping a pencil on the table, singing loudly, and tapping one’s foot on the floor, burping, chatting, interrupting somebody when talking and others which create disturbing sounds that can annoy and bother people in the workplace. Hence, employees should be mindful of their habits, and they should be sensitive enough to know whether they are affecting other people with their personal habits. Manners/ Behavior Proper behavior is needed in any place, most importantly in the office. People should learn how to respect each other in the workplace and should always be polite. They should say please when asking a favor, and they should always say â€Å"thank you† and â€Å"you are welcome† when necessary. One act of respect in the workplace is respecting the time. One should always be punctual when coming to work or to a meeting. When running late, they should always give an advance notice. Still, it will be much better not to be late at all. Another factor under manner and behavior is learning how to apologize and admit mistakes. One should say â€Å"sorry† if he or she knows something was not done correctly. An individual should be humble enough to do this; it shows that a person has great sense of respect for other people in the workplace. Blaming is never an option; people should not blame other people when something goes wrong at work (Schneider, 2006). Phone Manner There is said to be a correct manner of answering the phone at workplace. In answering a phone one should say hello and say the name, title, and department where they are working. Always be polite and be careful with the tone of the voice while talking to somebody on the phone, since this will make an impression. Another important aspect of using the office phone is to use it only for business or work purposes and not for personal calls like calling friends or family members for own personal reasons. In addition, the use of speakerphones is only advisable to use if people are in a conference call. It is not sensible to use speakerphones when talking to one person on the phone since it may distract others inside the office when they hear the loud conversation over the telephone. It is also considered to be rude (Reid, 2008). Sickness/Illnesses It is part of the human nature to get sick and become ill. In cases such as fever, flu, colds, and other illnesses, one should be considerate of others as some illnesses are highly contagious. It is unadvisable to come to work; instead, the sick employees should take a leave of absence for a few days and wait until they feel better and have fully recovered from sickness. It is important for employees to inform co-workers and superiors about their condition so that people in the office will know what happened in the case that an employee does not show up at work (McKay, 1997). Eating/Dining There are a lot of etiquette issues when it comes to eating and dining. If people in the office are in a lunch meeting or in a work-related occasion, it is very important to observe proper manners during meals. When ordering food, one should make sure that the food is not very expensive, unless everybody orders the same menu like lobsters and other pricey foods. Employees should be sure that the food ordered is just enough, and they can finish it all without leftovers. In buffets, there are some people who take too much then leave it unfinished later. This creates a very bad impression on them and can be considered rude as well. The proper way of eating is also important; chewing the food silently and not talking while eating are table manners that should also be observed while eating with co-workers (Schneider, 2006). Understanding and following all the ethical standards in the office will make the workplace comfortable and a good place for people to stay and work. If all of the said office etiquettes will be followed by all workers, then companies and businesses will have fewer problems. They will be able to work productively and efficiently and make the working environment happy, peaceful, and favorable for everybody who is working in the office. Business or office etiquette builds a good relationship with people in the workplace. It just takes discipline and hard work to achieve this goal. References About. com. (2008). Office Etiquette. The eNotes Blog 10 Must-Read Graphic Novels (for the Graphic NovelN00b)

10 Must-Read Graphic Novels (for the Graphic NovelN00b) If youre a graphic novel newbie, chances are that when you hear the term graphic novel, you immediately think, Oh, a comic book! or something else to that effect. And who could blame you? With the ever-growing popularity of the Marvel Universe and the continuous makes and remakes of the  Batman franchise, it seems that comic books are everywhere- and they certainly are graphic novels. But as it turns out, theres  more to this variety of storytelling than colorfully-dressed, muscly people with inhuman powers! In fact, while superhero comics have their place (and its a big place, mind you), there are a whole host of graphic novels about real-world issues that delve into intriguing, funny, mysterious, and even downright scary stories. To help you get started on this exciting, visual reading adventure, we put our heads together,  had some discussions about our favorite graphic novels, and finally compiled  the top ten  initial must-reads  into this list. The following are pres ented in no particular order aside from that in which I wrote them down. Maus: The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman To start this list off with something a little heavy, we begin with Art Spiegelmans autobiographical work about his fathers experience  living as a Polish Jew during Hitlers reign of terror in Europe. The tale weaves between two primary storylines, one taking place in modern New York City and the other in Hitlers Europe. Spiegelmans use of anthropomorphic animals to tell the tale adds to the characterization of the various peoples and how they were depicted and seen during that time period. The cartoonish quality makes it equal parts accessible and haunting due to the historical subject matter. Batman: Arkham Asylum (15th Anniversary Edition) by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean Okay, number two on the list and were already talking about Batman. These stories are famous for a reason, and there are hundreds upon hundreds of  Batman comics- the first one was published 77 years ago in 1939. We selected  Arkham Asylum in particular due to its unique storyline and absolutely amazing artwork. The story takes place on April Fools Day, and the inmates of Gothams Arkham Asylum have overpowered their guards and taken them hostage, demanding Batman in exchange for freeing the innocent. Of course, Batman being Batman, he answers the demands of his foes and has to face both his sworn enemies and his inner demons. (The Joker features prominently in this story, and he is the biggest baddie of the baddies, if you dont mind me saying so.) Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons This is the comic that put superhero comics on the map- and elevated them to a more adult audience. Set in the 1980s,  Watchmen follows the journey of retired heroes forced back into action  with the onset of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. The half-psychotic and gone-to-seed vigilante Rorschach uncovers a dastardly plot to murder the remaining superheroes and millions of civilians, and is forced to drag his fellow out-of-shape superfriends out of retirement to put an end to the madness. Fun Fact:  Watchmen is the only graphic novel to have ever made  Time magazines Top 100 Best Novels List. V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd A lot of people are familiar with the story of  V for Vendetta because of the 2005 hit movie starring Natalie Portman (and her shaved head that she totally rocked), but it may come as a surprise that this tale began as a graphic novel! Set in a totalitarian England, in the aftermath of a globe-changing war, we follow the lives of a mysterious man in a white, porcelain mask and his young protà ©gà © as they fight political oppression through seemingly meaningless acts of terrorism. In a world where personal freedom is entirely nonexistent, the lines between ideologically-based notions of good and evil are inherently blurred, leaving it up to the reader to determine who is right and who is wrong. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Volume 1 2  by Alan Moore and Kevin ONeill If youve ever wanted to see some of your favorite literary characters united and fighting crime, then look no further than  The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen! Mina Harker (who had a bit of a nasty run-in with Count Dracula back in Transylvania), Captain Nemo (who captained the Nautilus in  20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), Allan Quatermain (assistant to King Solomon), and many more are brought into the same timeline and must set out to conquer famous the villain Fu Manchu (of his own series and fame). The real question is: will they be able to stop fighting amongst themselves in time to stop Fu Manchu? Sandman:  Preludes and Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman Taking a turn into the horror/fantasy realm of the graphic novel,  Sandman  follows the story of Dream (also known as the titular Sandman) as he is finally freed  from decades of imprisonment and sets out to return his kingdom to its former state of prosperity. Sandman is a series that delves deep into a realm of anthropomorphic embodiments of metaphysical realities. Undoubtedly intended for more mature audiences,  Sandman delves into adult themes of revenge, death, darkness, and a fantasy realm that could be considered a place of nightmares as well as one of dreams. Fables: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham To lighten the mood, we can look to  Fables, a reinterpretation of classic fables and fairytales set  in modern-day New York City. More specifically, the fairytale characters who can  fit in are taken to New York City, while the others are sent to The Farm in upstate New York- youd better believe this comes a point of contention between the anthropomorphic characters and those who appear more human, i.e. the Big Bad Wolf vs. Cinderella. It seems that an unnamed evil force (known as The Adversary) has  overtaken the Fairytale kingdom and forced its former inhabitants into exile. The exiled people have formed their own peaceful, secret society in which they live and plot to eventually overthrow The Adversary and regain their lands. Saga of the Swamp Thing by Alan Moore If youve gained only one thing from this list, let it be that Alan Moore is a comic-creating genius. Swamp Thing is another comic character who, like Batman, has been around forever. Unlike  Batman,  Swamp Thing was in real danger of cancellation back in the 80s, that is, before Moore got around to saving the day (and the franchise). Taking over after the Swamp Thing was allegedly murdered by a foe, Moore changed  the game by  deciding  that the Swamp Thing was never actually human at all- he only believed that he had once been an acclaimed scientist. This plot twist put the saga  back on the map, intriguing readers all over again with questions like: Where did Swamp Thing come from? And what happened to the scientist Alec Holland? Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra What would you do, female readers, if one day, every male mammal on planet Earth suddenly and inexplicably died? Well, except for one, anyway. Y: The Last Man delves into that very question, following the life of protagonist Yorick Brown and his monkey sidekick (another somehow-surviving male) as they struggle for answers to the questions of their survival  and the looming, apparently inevitable mass extinction of the human race. Marvel 1602  by Neil Gaiman A relatively short series,  Marvel 1602 consists of only eight installments. Taking place in, you guessed it, 1602, our favorite Marvel superheroes (and villains) have been transported to the Elizabethan Era,  where they face the usual suspects of good and evil, but also some more complicated  adversaries, like their own government embarking on a witch hunt, and the presence of a hero who isnt quite sure which century hes in. Published in 2002, the writing of  Marvel 1602 began almost immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks; author Neil Gaiman was loathe to create a typical comic set in the  modern era that involved any modern weapons or that contained the ideology  of  might equals right. As a result, a comic set in an earlier time was born. Sure, between the magic-fearing King James VI and the fight between wrong and right, theres still plenty of conflict, but youre not going to see any bombings or bazooka-esque weaponry. It was super hard keeping this list to ten titles knowing there are many, many more! Which graphic novels  would you add to a MUST read  list for the graphic novel newbie?

Why the American Civil Rights Movement was more successful than Essay

Why the American Civil Rights Movement was more successful than movements for foreigners rights in Japan have been (at least so far) - Essay Example In the U.S, the major social movement was the African-American Civil Rights movement whose main goal was to bring an end to discrimination and racial segregation to the Africans living in the country. The movement heavily campaigned on civil resistance by arranging civil disobedience and non-violence protests, which would lead to crisis all over the country. Industrial boycott was the mostly used as it negatively affected the country’s economic activities as almost all Africans worked as factory workers all over the entire country. Their efforts were rewarded when the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed (DAngelo, 2001). The Act banned any form of discrimination based on a person’s religion, color, sex, race and national origin in employment and public interaction. Another enactment that was pushed by the movement was the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which stated the voting rights of migrants to the U.S and protecting these rights. The foreigner rights movement in Japan fought f or the few migrants to the country who were subjects to discrimination, harsh treatment by the authorities and racial discrimination. The movement arranged protests and boycott but only a few people came out to fight for their rights. The movement did not have the numbers to push for an end of the oppression foreigners were going through. Another reason why the foreigner rights movements in Japan failed to be successful was the lack of major legislative processes that would lead to the enactment of Acts that would help fight for their rights. The political opportunity and framing theory of social movement clearly explains why the movement in the U.S became successful and contributed to the passage of major bills, which resulted to the end of migrant oppression in the country as compared to the foreigner movement in Japan (Tsuda, 2006). One of the key bases that led to the success of

Exploratory methods Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Exploratory methods - Research Paper Example In such context, Naslund (2008) defined case study approach as contraction of positivistic perspectives where researchers try to formulate case by analyzing secondary data or generate assumptions from small no of observations. Naslund (2008) defined four conditions for which, researchers should select case study approach over other exploratory methods and these three criteria can be defined in the following manner; When the research problem needs to be addressed through qualitative research. When researchers cannot access the primary data from respondents due endogenous and exogenous constraints. When aim of the researcher is to generate new knowledge regarding the research topic rather than validating previous claims. Researcher has the aim to address the research problem in comprehensive manner by comparing the examples of different subject matters. It is evident from the argument of Aastrup & Halldorsson (2008); researchers use summary findings of particular phenomenon as the case and use it to compare the phenomenon. In most of the cases, researchers use secondary sources such as company data, previous research works, academic journals etc to formulate the case while in exceptional cases, researchers might go for primary data based case formation approach (Naslund, 2008). There are some advantages associated with case study based exploratory research such as, 1- cost efficient, 2- requires less time than primary survey and 3- provides holistic view on the subject matter. But, Aastrup & Halldorsson (2008) pointed out that some disadvantages are associated with case study based research approaches such as, 1- researchers might indulge in incorporating subjective view on the research problem in the name of exploration and 2- scope of case study approach decreases with non availability of data. Despite these limitations, Naslund (2008) supported case study based approach as one of the fundamental aspect of exploratory research. Cozby (2012) and Campbell (2012) defined psychobiography as an important aspect of exploratory research which focuses on analyzing the lives of individuals who are historically important. In case of psychobiography, researchers take help of psychological theory and concepts in order to understand the lives of the very individual. Key objective of psychobiography is to understand the personality of the historically important figure and their motive behind taking any action. For example, Campbell (2012) did psychobiography of Jacques Derrida (one of the renowned thinker of twentieth century) while political leaders like Gandhi, Hitler, Stalin are some famous subjects among researchers to conduct psychobiography. Campbell (2012) also pointed out that psychobiography is not commentary like traditional biography rather psychobiography is intended to find self-identity of the historically important figure. Question 7 Jimerson (2003) stressed on the importance of archive as knowledge repository which stores historical dat a, criminal records, litigation papers etc in the course of exploratory research. Jimerson (2003, p. 91) stated that â€Å"representation in archives has privileged the stories of these groups, since it is their voices that are most often recorded and thus most frequently heard in historical accounts.† According to Jimerson (2003), archival research is alternative version

Main Cause Of Environmental Issues In China Environmental Sciences Essay

Main Cause Of Environmental Issues In China Environmental Sciences Essay Population problems are one of the worlds most important social problems, and they are the cores of many contemporary social problems. Also, population problems are closely connected to environmental issues, and the earth is threatened by them. There are different kinds of population problems which China is facing now, and the problems of Sole child policy have begun to show: First, the overpopulation problem; second, the population aging problem; third, the decline of population quality problem. The statistics show that China has the biggest population in the world, and there are probably 1.3 billion people in China. In addition, the speed of population growth is amazing that the average annual growth rate is up to 0.57%. Large population and weak carrying capacity are the basic national conditions of China at this stage, and it is difficult to change in a short time. The population problem is a long-term problem in the primary stage of socialism in China, and it may lead to limited resources, less sustainability of the earth, and the poorer population quality. These results are all main causes of environmental issues in China, and the Chinese government has paid attention on these problems. Why China has too much population? The first reason is that China has low cost of having children. The lower cost of having children in the place, there will be the higher density of population. The geographical feature in China is that the western part is high, and the eastern part is low. The highest Tibetan Plateau in the western region has average 4,000 meters of altitude above sea level, and to the eastern coastal areas, it is less than a few hundred meters. This terrain condition is affected by Pacisic monsoon, which makes the rains concentrate on May to December. Also, the growth of crops needs moisture and temperature, and May to December in China has both heat and rain in the same period, these make China suitable for food planting, especially for the cultivation of high-yielding rice. In such areas suitable for the cultivation of rice, there will be more grain output in the same proportion. Using food as a unit of account to calculate, China has a lower cost of dependents. Therefore, a larger number of depen dent will make the population density be larger. The secondly reason can be that China has different cultures and different religions. Ancient Chinese thought that no offspring was a big problem, and in order to carry on the family line, they needed early marriage and childbearing traditions. Also, they were desired for sons, and they would not stop having babies until a son was born because they thought sons could support the parents when they got old. In addition, there can be another religious factor such as the East Asian religions restrict abortion. These directly cause that each family has many children, which is a basis of overpopulation in China today. The third reason of why there are many people in China is that after the liberation, medical conditions greatly improved, and the survival rate of babies was highly improved. Also, Chairman Mao in that period suggested that more people would have more power because of the demand of labor for the technology backward and lack of military power that time. In brief, these three reasons show that China has a huge population base, and with the growth of the population every year, it leads to overpopulation in China, which results in a series of environmental issues now. Why overpopulation in China causes environmental issues? With the growth of population and the improvement of product tools, the depth and breadth of the usage of the nature are perpetually expanded, and humans interference on ecological environment is bigger and bigger. When peoples business activities reverse natural original balance and coordination, and the nature cannot make up itself for the damage by human activities, there will be a series of ecological environmental issues. It can be reflected through many aspects such as limited resources, serious pollution, and decease in biodiversity. Because the population is becoming bigger, the demand of industry for resources and economy in China is becoming bigger. However, the industry is like a double-edged sword, and at the same time it brings prosperity and civilization, it also brings negative effects. Due to various reasons, Chinas not very large industry destroys natural ecosystems, and increases environmental pollution. From a domestic perspective, as city as a center, the range of environmental degradation is still expanding; soil erosion and desertification degree aggravated; resource destruction and waste is widespread, and some important resources gap gradually widened. Environmental pollution and degradation become one of the main factors restricting the sustainable development of Chinas economy and threatening the health of people. In 2002, the worlds forest coverage rate is 31.3%, but China is only 14%. Due to the irrational use of pasture, the grassland shows degradation, desertification, and salinization trends, and the average grass yield decreased by 30%-50%. In the arid and semi-arid areas, precipitation is far below evaporation, and vegetation is sparse and the ecology is fragile. The mild human activity is likely to lead to land degradation and desertification. China is one of the worlds most serious soil erosion countries, and serious soil erosion and desperate short of water resources eventually led to the devastating floods and Southwest drought in 2010. In northern China, the desert, Gobi, and desertified lands have reached 1.54 million square kilometers, accounting for 16% of the total land areas. Also, the biodiversity is continuously decreased. According to Stancheva, she said that: All of the previously described effects of overpopulation on the environment lead to the destruction of the natural habitat of many wildlife species (Stancheva). Chinas biodiversity is very rich, and higher plants and biological species account for 10% of the world. However, biodiversity is under a double threat from population growth and environmental degradation. Nearly half a century, China has more than 1,000 kinds of species extinction, which include about 200 species of higher plants. 15%-20% of plants and animal species are endangered, including about 4,600 species of higher plants and 400 kinds of wild animals. In addition, because of overpopulation, the industry activities become more important, which brings population. The air pollution is very serious, and the quality of atmospheric environmental in more than 500 cities cannot reach international standards. The pollution comes mainly from coal-fired release of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, smoke, dust pollution, and automobile exhaust pollution. In addition, the quality of water environment is deteriorating due to industrial wastewater discharge. The levels of pollutants in the water environment is far more than national quality standards, even infiltrating contaminated groundwater, which leads to the situation that local residents have no water to drink. Also, the emissions of solid waste are increasing, but the treatment rate and comprehensive utilization rate is not high. Finally, the noise pollution in the city becomes a major hazard. National regional environmental noise pollution rate is among the highest in the world. In general, higher demand for industry activities causes a series of environmental problems such as the lost of forest, the soil erosion, the decrease in biodiversity and pollution. Also, higher demand for industry activities is a result of overpopulation. Therefore, overpopulation is an indirect factor of environmental problems. The solutions for environmental problems caused by overpopulation The first solution is that accelerate the progress of science and technology to improve the sustainability. The government must enhance Chinas resources alternative capacity and ability to regenerate; the government also needs to enhance the assimilative capacity of the environment to reduce waste emissions. The second solution is improving education and health situation, and enhancing peoples quality. Environmental issues are very close to peoples quality problems, and sustainable development requires changing the traditional values of the environment to make everyone shoulder the responsibility to promote human harmony with the environment. The third solution is insisting on the national policy of family planning to reduce the burden on the environment. It is necessary to strict control of population growth, and to make the population growth rate in the level of which economic power and the supply of resources can withstand. The final solution can be improving resource utilization and reducing resources wasted. To conserve resources not only needs to reduce waste of resource consumption, but also must reduce the waste of resource development. At present, China has a serious waste in resource development. Also, strengthening the management of resources and improving resource utilization are an important part of the coordination of relations between people and lands. In conclusion, overpopulation is one of Chinas population problems, and if the government and people do not pay attention on it and do not have some solutions for it, there will be a huge damage to the environment.

Emerson Characterizes a True Poet :: Emerson Poet Essays

Emerson Characterizes a True Poet We live in world today where people claim to be songwriters, musicians, artists, and even poets. These people say they are because they feel they have a gift or a special talent. They try to use their talent to make money and never once stop and do it to feed their soul or look at it for the beauty of the piece. Emerson says to be a true poet one must have these qualities: the sayer, the namer and represents beauty (1648). If you try to write putting yourself in the view of Emersonà s The Poet then you too will become a great writer or poet. First we should look at the quality of the sayer. Basically all it is, is that you announce that which no man foretold. He is the true and only doctor; he knows and tells; he is the only teller of news. He is the beholder of the ideas...(1648-49). Emerson claims all poetry was written before time and that the true poet, when he writes, listens to the region where air is music and you hear whispers of poetry and the poet begins to write. The true poet will write it down accurately and with a delicate ear. The world we live in is such a work of art and its much a privilege to be living here. A poet can just go outside and write about the beauty he sees before him. There is so much one can write. One could write about life experiences, or one could just write about nature and its splendor. Emerson says that nature is like a picture-language and nature is expressed through images or symbols..nature is a symbol in the whole and every part. Every line we draw in the sand has expression and there is no body without its spirit or genious (1650). Emerson basically looks at everything in this world as a symbol because each image has so many different interpretations and ways to express it. Beauty is much in the eye of the beholder and how we express a particular item is up to the person and everyoneà s expression would different. Thatà s what makes poetry so great. The Poet is also the namer, or language maker, naming things sometimes after their appearance or essence and giving to every one its own name (1653).

Man Is His Own Worst Enemy Essay

Right from the beginning, Man rules supreme over all other life forms. He establishes himself at the top of the food chain, he goes through painstaking experiments to lit up the darkness that comes at night and through decades of scientific progression he is able to pit himself against the unpredictable weather changes. Thus he is able to place himself parallel to cosmic significance. He then proceeds to defeat the onslaught of diseases and the invisible enemies known to us as bacteria and viruses and conquers geographical hurdles. Man sustains his own survival in ways no other life forms can. The sophisticated ways in which Man maintains his existence remain uncontested by any other life forms.  Clearly, humans set themselves apart from the other species because the human body is gifted with impeccable intellectual abilities. At a glance at all the achievements man had single handedly accomplished over the time, one must think what mortal hand or eye could challenge man for his po sition. But one may want to think again. No animals would inflict pain on another of their own kind, or even other kinds, for reasons other than self-defence and food. Yet the intelligent Man would. History of mankind illustrates man’s propensity to achieve his personal greed and glory at the expanse of another of kind. This aspect of Man remains uncontested too. I opened my mail box one morning and received a copy of The Economist. The front cover reads â€Å"A heart-rending but necessary war†. It is rather amazing how man can associate war with the term ‘necessary’. The article speaks of the retaliation of United States against the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001. After the two great wars that threatened to annihilate the entire tapestry of humanity in the twentieth century, Man still has not learned. Man has ironically progressed from an uncivilised state to now where killing each other has become a necessity. Dropping bombs and food supplies at the same time is evidence of the disillusionment that man brings upon himself. The anti-terrorist war in Afghanistan comprises a series of bomb attacks targeted on terrorists’ camps. At the same time food supplies are also being dropped on similar grounds, targeted on innocent civilians. Surely by supplying food to the civilians man must have contemplated initially the repercussions that would follow if a war should begin? Perhaps we should applaud that man has finally found ‘civilised’ way waging a war? Or does it  reinforce that the greatest tragedy lies in the fact that man is aware of the consequences of his own action and still continues with it? War could only mean one thing; civilians from both sides die, guilty and non-guilty alike. Man is torn between what is essentially right and wrong. He chooses to kill some and save some. At the end of the day he realises that it doesn’t have to be that way at all if he had kept to what is essentially necessary, that is peace. But no, man would not hear of that now. He would want to venture into something he does not know and learn things the hard way, bringing down with him innocent lives and p recious natural resources vital for future consumption. Man has now to face the unbeatable monster in him. Consider the nuclear and biochemical weapons that man has invented. Is this another folly of the fallen man? That, we are not sure just as yet but we know nuclear weapons are not built because they happen to be another high-tech devices set in trend. It is because the existence if nuclear weapons also comes with it a newfound power for the owner. A power to kill and to control. Finally, man has found the ultimate killing means that promises high death rates and effective elimination of any party that get in his way with great ease. But the underlying nuances for such creation is scarier, the insinuation that man would destroy each other at some point in time willingly, without actual consideration for the consequences of it. This is quite ironic for man who wielded such supreme intellect, to not to consider his actions. Or is it that Man just does not care? Examine the case of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where the first atomic bombs were dropped and killed more than the actual numbers at that time. The ghost of the event still haunts many today psychologically and physically. The bombs that US are dropping on Afghanistan’s territories are supposed to explode upon reaching the ground but many did not. These bomblets would then maim and kill many like landmines long after the war has ended. Man has set out to kill themselves after centuries of trying to survive? The numbers killed in relative to proportion is explicitly high and man still could not explain himself. World War II saw the physical manifestation of evil in man. Over six million  Jews were expeditiously eradicated for good from the face of the earth. Consider the methodical and efficient ways the Jews are killed tells of man who would inflict torture and pain on another fellow human being maliciously and intentionally for basically no reason at all. Even if the whole war boils down to the one sole lunatic proprietor, Hitler, it gives no reason for the rest below him to carry out such senseless killings simply because it was an order. It still astounds many that such acts that cause such revulsion now did not seem so to the culprits at that time. Man is such complicated creature that his existence is full of conflicts within himself. To defeat your enemy must mean that you understand him, but man is now faced with an enemy that he could not at all comprehend despite the natural intellect ordained from above. A famous philosopher once said that the greed in man sows the seeds of deceit and eventually downfall of the man himself. Adam Smith’s theory of the laissez faire, to put it nicely, is the liberal allowances for man to exploit the resources for his own satisfaction. Karl Marx opposes that theory and put it simply that such freedom of actions in economy would eventually allow the greed of man to multiply itself until it could not contain itself, thus the outburst of despair would mark the end of humanity. In Singapore, we are faced with the worst recession since the 1960s and approximately 30000 to 40000 people are out of job. In the US, more than 400 000 people are laid off in two months and numbers are still expected to rise. What we are seeing here is that the players in the economy have played against themselves. During these times, those who had hands in the stocks investments find themselves literally with nothing. The ‘Notices’ section in the newspapers sees an increase in the number of bankruptcies. Participants in the race for property ownerships in Singapore, particularly during the mid 1990s experienced an exponential plunge in property prices and landed themselves in unending debts. Greed for purchasing power tempted many to subscribe to more than one credit card and now find themselves not able to keep afloat in the interests that tantamount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Many do not realise their own folly until they fall flat in their faces. Hence the greed, miscalculation and speculative spirit  becomes what responsible for the downfall of man. In daily ventures, individuals often find themselves entangled in webs of deceit, lies, manipulation, jealousy and spite. Many times, Man is the cause of failed relationships and careers. Over-indulgence and yielding to temptations, it seems like Man’s nature works like the double-edged sword. It could build or destroy oneself. Life progresses from one of blissful existence to one of struggle. In every man lies the green-eyed monster, the inextinguishable greed and within these also is the struggle of conscience. Thus is the nature of man who has become so intricate and practically unfathomable. Until man could finally understand himself, what he wants and what is essentially necessary in life, he remains his own worst enemy.

Translating English -ing Words to Spanish

Translating English -ing Words to Spanish If youre translating an English -ing word into Spanish, youll find it helpful to first figure out which part of speech it is. You may think of -ing words as verbs. But they can also  be a noun, adjectives, or adverbs. If you can tell which part of speech an -ing word is, youre well on your way to translating it to Spanish. With that principle in mind, here are some of the most common ways of translating -ing words: -Ing Words as Verbs If an -ing word is functioning as a verb, it is probably being used in a progressive tense. Sentences such as I am studying and She was working are examples of using a progressive tense. In Spanish, progressive tenses are formed in much the same way as in English, by using a form of estar (to be) followed a gerund (the verb form ending in -ando or -endo). Keep in mind, however, that the progressive tenses are used more in English than in Spanish, so it may be more appropriate to use a simple tense instead. See how the following English sentences can be translated using either progressive or simple tenses: She is studying today. Est estudiando hoy. Estudia hoy.I wasnt driving a car downtown yesterday. Yo no estaba manejando un carro en el centro ayer. Yo no manejaba un carro en el centro ayer.We will be dining in your honor. Estaremos comiendo en su honor. Vamos a comer en su honor. Comeremos en su honor. -Ing Words as Nouns It is very common to translate -ing sentence subjects using the Spanish infinitive (the verb form ending in -ar, -er or -ir). However, sometimes there is a separate noun, not a word that is also a verb form, that can be used as well or instead. Sometimes, especially when the -ing word is the object of a verb, the sentence may need to be recast for translation. Seeing is believing. Ver es creer.Buying on the Internet is a simple process. Es un proceso simple el comprar por Internet.Crying doesnt do any good. Llorar no sirve de nada.Swimming is the most complete sport. La natacià ³n es el deporte ms completo. Prefiero que vivas aquà . -Ing Words as Adjectives When an English -ing word functions as an adjective, it can sometimes be translated as an adjectival present participle, a form ending in -ante or -ente. But where none exists, which is usually the case, some other adjective or clause must be used. It may be necessary to recast the sentence for direct translation. Soul is another way of saying person or living being. Alma es otra manera de decir persona o ser viviente.I cant hear the snoring man. No puedo oà r el hombre que ronca. The drink can have a calming influence. La bebida puede proporcionar una influencia calmante.I dont have her forwarding address. The princess went away singing because she felt happy. La princesa se fue cantando porque se sentà a feliz. He studied, thinking about her. Él estudiaba pensando en ella. Imported Terms Although their practice is criticized by purists, many Spanish speakers have adopted a few English s include jogging, marketing and camping. Note, however, that these words often change in meaning once they are adopted into the language. Camping, for example, can be synonymous with the English noun, but it also can mean a campground or campsite. Marketing is an economic activity that pursues strategies for optimizing sales. El marketing es una actividad econà ³mica que busca estrategias para optimizar las ventas.Jogging can be done anywhere. El footing se puede realizar en cualquier lugar.
